Last year, traffic on I-4 was bumper-to-bumper for miles. How many cars ran out of gas in between exits? This year, I think the bus tour is the way to go. No contending with a record number of other drivers; having a designated driver ; accommodations arranged in advance; a lesser number of cars on the highways and roads, reducing the amount of pollutants expelled into the atmosphere...it's a win-win situation for all.

This becomes a very timely dedication in light of the fact 2014 is the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act by, then President, Lyndon Baines Johnson. I'd like to see plans made for future trips going forward to that time. This is a very exciting event for Americans; and African-Americans, in particular. Hope to see you there.

I am an environmental planner trained in scientific management techniques at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The genuine efforts of teachers and practicing scientists and engineers to provide public school lab space for independent investigations to be entered into science fairs provided my opportunity; a STEM education and career need not come only from superior grades or test scores.

Unlike creative writing or the social sciences accuracy in problem identification and solving are of paramount importance as students contemplate the bachelor of Science. Further even career scientists make the mistake of focusing on the past and not the future; women were seldom welcome before the 1970's, Native Americans, Blacks and Latinos were seldom encouraged to use displayed skill with numbers to pursue chemistry, physics and calculus, and the basic ecology of our world was often overlooked in planning our industrial economy from the 1880's.

None of this should dissuade anyone from considering the bachelor of science; in fact it should be a spur. Since most scientific professionals are White males, with White women making gains, it is largely up to them to identify underrepresented students early, track them for college curricula and mentor them; it cannot be left to the few non-White professionals and teachers. I salute those who have done this for me and who have transformed compulsory education and campus life by trying to open the scientific fields to non-traditional students. It makes all the difference. I speak for those who have been mentored but may not find this article. To learn more about the gains made in this regard I refer you to the Wikipedia article on Leon Higgenbotham who attended Purdue in the 1940's.
